Strong consumer expenditure growth in Switzerland in September

The Consumer Spending Index (CSI) Switzerland grew by 3.5% in September 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. The increase was driven by higher spending in the category Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco (+7.9%); and, compared to August 2025, spending in the category Retail: Other goods has been no longer declining, showing a small increase (+1.6%).

Spending at the point of sale in the category Accommodation continued to decline, especially in Zurich and Central Switzerland, but has been growing in e-commerce. The spending in e-commerce has continued to grow across all spending categories.

The growth in overall spending, at the point of sale and in e-commerce, was broad-based across Swiss regions and especially pronounced in Northwestern (+3.8%), Espace Mittelland (+3.9%), Eastern (+4.4%), and e-commerce (+7.1%).

The CSI Switzerland is a joint initiative of the University of St.Gallen and its research partner Worldline Switzerland AG. The high-frequency index is granular across regions and broad product categories and allows for a consistent analysis over multiple years. It is updated monthly.
