The Consumer Spending Index (CSI) Switzerland decreased by 0.1% in August 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year.
Higher spending in e-commerce (+7.7%) did not fully offset lower expenditures at the point-of-sale across all regions. The decline in consumer expenditures was especially pronounced in Zurich (-3.2%).
In the whole of Switzerland, the categories Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco (+2.3%) and Accommodation (+2.5%) experienced higher consumer spending whereas spending in Retail: Other goods (-2.6%) decreased.

The CSI Switzerland is a joint initiative of the University of St.Gallen and its research partner Worldline Switzerland AG. The high-frequency index is granular across regions and broad product categories and allows for a consistent analysis over multiple years. It is updated monthly.
