The Consumer Spending Index (CSI) Switzerland increased substantially (+3.2%) in December 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. Spending growth was broad-based across all regions and driven by higher expenditure growth in Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco (+6.7%).
For the full year 2025, compared to 2024, the CSI Switzerland increased by 1.5%, which is below the average yearly growth rate since 2019 (+2.4%) (see Figure 1). While the regions experienced mixed expenditure growth between +2.2% (Northwestern) and -1.1% (Zurich) for point-of-sale transactions, spending in e-commerce increased substantially (+7.1%). In all regions, spending at the point-of-sale in Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco (+4.8%) increased strongly, whereas spending in Retail: Other goods (-1.1%) declined. The increase in expenditure growth in e-commerce was particularly pronounced in Accommodation (+19.7%). Expenditures for Accommodation at the point-of-sale grew strongest in the regions Eastern (+4.2%) and Northwestern (+2.3%) but decreased substantially in the regions Central (-7.2%) and Zurich (-5.3%) (see Figure 2).
