Strong consumer expenditure growth in Switzerland in January

The Consumer Spending Index (CSI) Switzerland increased substantially (+3.0%) in January 2026 compared to the same month in the previous year. As in December 2025, spending growth was broad-based across all regions and driven by higher expenditure growth in Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco (+6.8%).

All categories except for Other (-2.6%) experienced positive growth rates. Similarly, all regions recorded substantially higher spending than in January 2025. This was especially pronounced at the point-of-sale in Northwestern (+4.5%), and also in E-commerce (+4.0%).

The CSI Switzerland is a joint initiative of the University of St.Gallen and its research partner Worldline Switzerland AG. The high-frequency index is granular across regions and broad product categories and allows for a consistent analysis over multiple years. It is updated monthly.
