Consumer expenditures grew in Switzerland in March, with a sharp increase at fuel stations

The Consumer Spending Index (CSI) Switzerland increased by 1.6% in March 2026 compared to the same month in the previous year.

This growth was driven by an increase in expenditures in the category Retail: Fuel stations (+11.8%), particularly in northwestern (+19.0%) and eastern (+17.5%) Switzerland. Furthermore, expenditures in the category Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco increased by 5.1%. Meanwhile, expenditures in the category Retail: Other goods declined by 1.9%.

The steepest decline of expenditures was recorded in the category Accommodation (-9.1%). Within that category expenditures developed quite differently across regions, however, as illustrated by the increase of point-of-sales expenditures in Ticino (+7.2%).
