Consumer expenditure grew in May (+2.2%), with fuel expenditures remaining high

The Consumer Spending Index (CSI) Switzerland increased by 2.2% in May 2026 compared to the same month in the previous year.

As in the previous two months, expenditures in Retail: Fuel stations rose significantly (+15.4%), most pronounced in northwestern Switzerland (+19.7%) and least pronounced in Ticino (+9.9%). Expenditures also grew in Retail: Food, beverage, tobacco (+3.1%) and Food and beverage services (+2.9%).

Expenditures in Accommodation fell by 1.1%, with large regional differences in expenditure growth at the point of sale: expenditures decreased in Zurich (-21.5%) and Northwestern Switzerland (-18.5%) but rose in Ticino (+11.8%) and Eastern Switzerland (+6.3%).
